In combat, have these NPCs fight in the background so they don't overshadow the characters or take up spotlight time better spent on the players' characters. Many adventures have companion NPCs that join the characters. Read more about 1st level encounters here. Most of the adventures described below do not level the characters quickly enough and are often deadly for 1st level characters. When starting at 1st level, get them to 2nd level quickly.Take the time up front to internalize the adventure and it will pay big dividends as you run it. The value and time-savings comes out over the course of the adventure. This certainly isn't lazy but you'll get much more out of a published adventure once you've read it through. Read through published adventures as much as you can.

Here are some quick tips for getting the most out of the adventures described below: I have yet to talk to any adventure designer who does not expect and recommend that groups tailor published adventure for their group. Adventure writers know this and recommend it. Few DMs run published adventures without modifying them to fit their own style and the desires of their group.
